Industrial Surface Preparation

Laser Cleaning for Weld Preparation and Surface Prep

Achieve Sa 2.5 and Sa 3 surface preparation standards without abrasive media, chemicals, or dimensional change. Pre-weld cleaning, pre-coating preparation, and in-situ structural steel cleaning.

Surface Preparation Standards Achieved

Our 300W and 500W pulsed fibre lasers achieve the following ISO 8501-1 surface preparation standards.

Sa 2.5

Near white metal

At least 95% of the surface is free from all visible residues. The standard required by most industrial coating specifications.

Sa 3

Visually clean steel

The surface is completely free from all visible contamination. Required for the most demanding coating systems and aerospace applications.

St 3

Thorough hand/power tool cleaning

Equivalent to thorough mechanical cleaning. Achieved by laser on surfaces where full Sa 2.5 is not required.

Applications

Laser surface preparation for welding, coating, inspection, and precision engineering.

Pre-weld cleaning

Remove mill scale, rust, oil, and contamination from weld zones. Laser cleaning produces a consistently clean surface that improves weld quality and reduces porosity.

Pre-coating preparation

Prepare steel to Sa 2.5 or Sa 3 standard before painting, powder coating, thermal spray, or other protective coatings.

Pre-inspection cleaning

Clean surfaces before NDT (non-destructive testing) inspection. Laser cleaning removes contamination without introducing new surface stresses.

Weld seam cleaning

Remove heat tint, oxidation, and spatter from completed weld seams without mechanical abrasion.

In-situ structural steel

Clean structural steel in place — on bridges, buildings, and infrastructure — without containment or media management.

Precision engineering components

Clean machined surfaces, tooling, and precision components where dimensional tolerance must be maintained.

Why Laser for Surface Preparation?

Achieves Sa 2.5 and Sa 3 surface preparation standards

No dimensional change — removes only contamination, not base metal

No abrasive media to contaminate weld zones or clean surfaces

No chemicals — no risk of hydrogen embrittlement or surface contamination

Consistent, repeatable surface profile

Can be used in-situ on fabricated structures

Suitable for carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and alloys

Minimal dust — small extraction unit handles fume

Technical Questions

Can laser cleaning achieve Sa 2.5 surface preparation standard?

Yes. Our 300W and 500W pulsed fibre lasers can achieve Sa 2.5 (near white metal) and Sa 3 (visually clean steel) surface preparation standards on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminium. We can provide documentation of the standard achieved if required.

Is laser cleaning suitable for weld preparation?

Yes. Laser cleaning is an excellent pre-weld preparation method. It removes mill scale, rust, oil, and contamination from weld zones without introducing abrasive media that could contaminate the weld. The result is a consistently clean surface that improves weld quality and reduces porosity.

Does laser cleaning change the surface profile of the metal?

Laser cleaning removes contamination without removing base metal, so it does not create the anchor profile that grit blasting produces. If a specific surface roughness profile is required for coating adhesion, this should be discussed at the quoting stage.

Can you clean structural steel in-situ before coating?

Yes. Our mobile laser unit can clean structural steel in place — on bridges, buildings, fabrications, and infrastructure — without the containment and media management that grit blasting requires.

Is laser cleaning suitable for stainless steel and aluminium?

Yes. Laser cleaning is suitable for carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and most engineering alloys. Parameters are adjusted for each material type to ensure the correct result.
