Full paint removal from a solid oak front door and sidelights — complicated by a hidden oil stain beneath the topcoat. We adapted our approach mid-job to protect the substrate and still delivered a clean bare-oak result.
The client wanted the grey painted topcoat removed from a solid oak front door and matching sidelights to reveal the natural grain beneath. Initial laser passes began removing the paint effectively, but we noticed the wood starting to singe in places — something that should not happen with correctly calibrated laser settings on bare oak. We stopped immediately to investigate.
On closer inspection we discovered the oak had been oiled before it was painted. The laser was warming the trapped oil beneath the topcoat, and as the paint lifted, the hot oil was scorching the wood surface. We changed approach: the topcoat was cold-stripped first using nylon abrasive wheels, which removed the paint without heat. Once the topcoat was gone, the laser was used selectively to remove residual oil staining from the grain where it remained — a process the laser handles cleanly once there is no trapped oil beneath a paint layer to superheat.
Full paint removal achieved with the natural oak grain completely preserved. The adapted two-stage method — cold strip followed by targeted laser finishing — added time to the job, but protected the substrate and delivered the clean bare-oak result the client needed. The door is now ready for an oil or hardwax finish of the client's choice.
